Why I Stopped Chasing Sales Calls (and Built a YouTube Lead Generation System Instead)

This month I’m building a Youtube lead generation system to replace my random “going to book # sales calls” goals, because you can’t expect fruit from a tree you haven’t even planted yet.

March’s campaign: YT Adstronaut!

This is a reboot of the campaign I tried last year, which was to get more accounting clients by running FB ads. That one didn’t work, because I had no idea what I was doing, got banned by Meta, and didn’t leave enough time for Google Ads algorithm to “warm up” before the tax deadline. 🤦

So I changed my approach to focus on organic traffic - specifically Youtube. (Because I hate all social media, but somehow Youtube doesn’t count 🤷). 

I actually really enjoy making YouTube videos but my production turnaround time is absolutely dismal. It takes me 3-4 weeks to edit an hour-long podcast and I want to be able to post a video 2-3 times per week. 

So the goal of this campaign is to create an automated video generator system that will allow me to oversee the production – like a director! – but will do all of the manual script writing, editing, etc. for me. 

So instead of “making YouTube videos” I'm essentially becoming a YouTube channel production studio 😄

I named this system BABY OS because it's been my baby for all of March 😆 and because it conveniently forms the acronym "Big-Ass Bookings from YouTube” Operating System. 😎

  • Created a custom tax prep system with AI
  • Built out phase one of the BABY architecture with Claude Code

## Issues with current campaigns

I ran into a hiccup with the motion graphic generation part. I was able to very carefully code the program to generate motion graphics in my brand style but having that level of control made it look very basic and not anywhere close to as impressive as I want it to look 🙈

I also am in the middle of closing a client (that I really wanted to be able to share this time as a win). He has signed the paperwork but has not paid the invoice yet, and I don't count anybody as a new client until they pay me. 😅


❌ Goals Not Accomplished (and why) 

## Evaluation

  • Closing a new client - new guy is waiting on investors to commit before he can pay me
  • Booking sales calls - I just cannot make myself do direct outreach to warm leads and I have not had any success with cold outreach either. Without a reliable lead gen system, setting a random goal for myself like “booking six sales calls” doesn't have any infrastructure to back it up. I would be trying to pull it out of thin air 🤷
  • Finishing BABY - Even using AI, coding a custom system takes longer than I thought it would. Plus I ran into the roadblock with the motion graphics template and needed to stop and do research so I could find a long-term solution I'd be happy with

## How the source discipline I’m basing the current campaign on is informing AE

You can't just pull fruit out of thin air. You have to grow the tree: wait for it to mature, water it, maintain it, and THEN you'll get reliable fruit every year.

Saying “I want to book X number of sales calls” or “I want to close X number of clients” is like trying to pull fruit out of thin air. 

Where are the sales calls going to come from? How are people going to know what I offer and whether they need/want it right now? How are they going to know I exist? 

If we look at the process backwards:

New client < sales call < invitation to sales call <  deciding they want offer < understanding offer < hearing about offer < knowing + trusting brand < many interactions with brand < hearing about brand.

I’m at the point where not that many people even know I exist – they haven’t heard of my brand. 

There's a lot of different ways to raise awareness and build rapport and authority, most of which I've tried; like manually posting on social media, running ads, creating YouTube content, posting a podcast / being a guest on podcasts.

Posting on social media and running ads are both out. One is a fit problem (I absolutely HATE it), and one is a growth stage problem (I don't have the revenue or proven product prerequisites for ads). 

YouTube and podcasts are something I enjoy, but my level of production for both of those is so tiny that it would take me a ridiculously long time to build the reach I would need for a sustainable lead gen pipeline.

Which is where BABY comes in!

## Cool things from my IRL garden

Started a new Heartleaf Philodendron from a cutting. Sometimes you don’t have to start from seed if you can propagate from someone else’s mature plant!

This is how I started my career as a professional pianist. My teacher propagated my business from hers by referring her waitlist to me. Et voilá! A new piano studio was born.
